Music Mentors – Supporting school choirs
We are looking to recruit talented and inspiring singers at the start of their career. We have exciting opportunities for freelance singers who are keen to work in music education, working with our Portsmouth primary schools in a support role. Our Music Mentors act as role models and valuable support to our teachers and Artists in Residence, working with our school choirs, with most school placements consisting of one-hour rehearsals on a weekly basis.

Ark is an education charity and one of the country’s top performing academy operators. Our academies are situated in areas of high disadvantage, with over 30% of Ark pupils eligible for free school meals, compared with 16% nationally. We currently work with 36 primary and secondary schools across London, Hastings, Portsmouth and Birmingham. Our vision is to create a group of outstanding schools that radically improve our pupils’ life chances.
The central music team exists within Ark to support music-making across the network. We believe that a high quality, progressive and diverse education in music is the entitlement of every child, regardless of their background. Our mission is to ensure that every pupil in an Ark school is set-up to enjoy a life enriched by music and the many holistic benefits that brings. We want our young people to leave school knowing that they are creative musicians who belong to a vibrant artistic community.
Main purpose of the job
Ark’s thriving music programme currently supports over 10,000 children across the country every week. Providing a wide range of school support both in and out of the classroom, the programme’s integrated approach to learning develops strong music curricula as well as school enrichment. We have opportunities for inspiring musicians to support our schools’ extra-curricular ensembles, ranging from choirs to drumming groups to mixed-level orchestras, working with the ensembles on a weekly basis from September onwards.
Successful applicants will join our portfolio of musician educators who work across our schools. These ‘Artists in Residence’ are freelancers who deliver aspects of the Ark Music Programme, often working on year-long placements, with some occasional additional work available on our network-wide events. By joining our Artist team, you will have access to high-quality training throughout the year and opportunities to network with our diverse roster of musicians.
Our programme seeks to represent and equally value different kinds of music and musician. We are keen to ensure the rich diversity of our art form is represented in our team and in turn, that our team is reflective of the communities we serve. Fee: Our Music Mentor pay scale starts at £25 for a one hour rehearsal

• Support weekly music rehearsals, through offering musical and operational support to the ensemble leader
• Develop and deliver a roster of relevant warm-ups, which are purposeful and fun
• Establish routines and systems which create a positive learning environment
• Act as a role model to students, modelling good behaviour and excellent musicianship
• Stay abreast of modern teaching practices

• Proven desire to work musically within an educational setting
• Ability and willingness to understand and respond to sometimes complex behavioural needs
• Open and responsive attitude towards engaging and collaborating with a variety of leaders, teachers, students and musical genres
• Ability to work flexibly to support pupils’ needs
• Extensive musical experience, including choral/ensemble work
• Engaging and inspiring musician, with demonstrable rapport with children
• Some experience working with primary and/or secondary children
• Knowledge of a variety of musical genres/styles
• A sound understanding of safeguarding procedures, or a willingness to undergo training in this area
• Up to date knowledge of developments and good practice in music education
